From Process Map to Product Story

Building through-process records and AI-queryable traceability.

Part 3 of 5 - From Data to Intelligent Industry

What if you could click on a finished product and immediately see the complete story of how it was made? Its raw materials. Every process it passed through. The machines involved. Production conditions. Laboratory tests. Quality results. Operators. Timestamps. Supplier information. Process deviations. And every relationship connecting them.

That is the potential of a modern Through Process Record, or TPR.

From networks to manufacturing

Some of our earlier work used network science to represent complex relationships in historical narratives. Instead of treating every interaction independently, the network allowed us to explore the complete structure and investigate relationships that would otherwise be difficult to identify.

The same principle can be applied to manufacturing. Instead of characters, the nodes become:

Raw Materials → Machines → Operators → Process Stages → Laboratory Tests → Quality Checks → Finished Products

The connections represent the actual journey taken by a product, batch or component. The result is no longer simply a process map - it becomes a living digital record of the product.

A process map that carries data

Traditional process maps show what should happen. A Through Process Record can show what actually happened to a specific product or batch. Each point in the process can carry information such as:

  • Process parameters
  • Timestamps
  • Machine settings
  • Material and supplier IDs
  • Laboratory results
  • Operator information
  • Quality checks
  • Maintenance records
  • Specifications and metadata

Over time, this creates an aggregated digital passport for every finished product. The principle is simple: don't just connect the process - connect the evidence generated by the process.

Then add AI

Once product history is structured as a connected system, organisations can begin asking much more powerful questions:

  • Show me every finished product containing material from supplier lot A123.
  • Which process conditions are common across batches that failed laboratory testing?
  • Trace this customer complaint through the complete production history.

Instead of searching across spreadsheets, laboratory systems and production databases, users interrogate the connected product story. Traceability then becomes more than compliance - it becomes a source of intelligence.
